Historia: 

Detrás de 'Smoke on the water' hay una historia real que tuvo lugar el 3 de diciembre de 1971. Para grabar su sexto álbum de estudio los británicos alquilaron el mítico estudio móvil de los Rolling Stones, utilizado también por Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Bob Marley, Santana o Iron Maiden, y se lo llevaron a la ciudad suiza de Montreux. Allí, en uno de los edificios del casino, se prepararon para registrar su nuevo disco, 'Machine head'.

Al mismo tiempo que ellos empezaban a grabar tenía lugar un concierto de Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention en el mismo casino, y ahí es donde comenzó la historia. Mientras la banda de Zappa interpretaba 'King Kong' alguien entre el público lanzó una bengala y el techo de la sala comenzó a arder. Las llamas acabaron con todo el complejo de edificios del casino de Montreux.

El humo en el agua del que habla la canción viene a ser el reflejo del incendio en el lago que había enfrente. El bajista Roger Glover fue quien apuntó la famosa frase y el cantante Ian Gillan fue el encargado de terminar una letra que describe detalladamente el incidente.

Deep Purple tuvo que buscar otro sitio para grabar su disco. Primero fueron a un teatro llamado The Pavillion, donde registraron 'Smoke on the water', pero los vecinos se quejaron por el ruido y tuvieron que hacer el resto del álbum en el Grand Hotel de Montreux. Para grabar el famoso riff Ritchie Blackmore dejó a un lado su habitual Fender Stratocaster y agarró una Gibson ES-355, que se le hacía más cómoda.

'Machine head' se publicó en 1972 y el single 'Smoke on the water' fue disco de oro un año después, cuando ya había sido grabado en directo también en el célebre 'Made in Japan'. Desde entonces la canción ha sido toda una referencia, un símbolo que, para los no iniciados en 'Deep Purple', ha llegado a encasillar a la banda.
